If a person is new to candle making, you should be advised that
you will make many attempts before you achieve what you are
looking for.

For this reason, you should buy a notebook and keep careful notes about things such as containers, wick holders, wicks,
pigments, dyes,fragrances, wax and any additives used, as well as the amounts used and when they were added.

You should carefully track the cooling time and make notes of any imperfections once the candle has cooled completely and is ready to burn. Note any cracks, air bubbles, discoloration, white lines, wells, flakes etc. Make notes of the coloring and fragrance prior to burning, the scent should be subtle and not overwhelming.

Make notes of the burn time and note the fragrance of the candle during burning. Ask yourself about the flame, is it too big, too small, does it smoke, is it drowned by the wax? You also may find that the fragrance is lighter while it’s burning.

Beginners often make the mistake of making too much when testing. It is always better to make smaller batches when testing, if your test is not successful it will save you a lot of leftover wax and a lot of money in wasted supplies.

Candles You Can Make In Your Own Kitchen

Two Easy to Make Candles

Soy candles can easily be made at home, in your own kitchen ! Here’s a list of the supplies you’ll need.1 quart (32 oz.) measuring cup
Wick Stabilizer (tweezers will work)
Glue Gun or stick’ems
Wicks
Candle Dye
Fragrance Oil
Containers
Soy Wax

Fill measuring cup with soy wax to the 32 oz. mark. Do not fill to overflowing. Microwave for 4 minutes (microwave ovens vary time my need adjusted). Wax should then be melted to 16 ounces. Add more soy wax to melted mixture until cup is filled back up to 32 ounces. Microwave for 4 more minutes. This will give you 32 ounces of melted wax (about 180 degrees). Set oven to lowest setting (warm). Wait 10 minutes and add candle dye to the mixture and immediately add fragrance oil of your choice. Pour mix into prepared containers. Set poured candles in a pan the oven. After 5 minutes of candles being in oven on warm, turn oven off. Keep oven door closed until candles are set

Making Votive or Pillar Candles.

Melting Pot
Thermometer
Mixing Spoon
Scale and/or Measuring pitcher
Votive/Pillar Wax
Fragrance Oil
Dye
Molds and Wicks

Weigh out amount of wax you’ll need. 1 pound of wax makes about 8 votive candles. 1 lb. of wax makes about one 3″ x 4″ pillar candle. Place wax in melting pot and heat on low setting. Use thermometer and heat to approximately 170-180 degrees. Never overheat the wax. While wax is melting, set up your molds on a sturdy surface. Add wick or wick pins. After wax has melted, remove pot from heat source. Add your fragrance oil. 1 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of wax gives you a 6% fragrance concentration. Add your dye using a dropper, adding one drop at a time, stirring constantly, until the desired color is achieved. You can test your color by dropping drops of wax on wax paper. Check your temperature should be between 160-170 degrees. Slowly pour wax into the mold leaving about 1/4″ from the top. You will have wax left over. Let the wax harden. You will notice a sinkhole at the top of the candle. Warm remaining wax, do not overheat. When wax is re-melted, slowly pour wax on top of candles. Let the candles completely harden. They should be cool to touch. Remove candle from mold, if needed push wick in from bottom of candle, apply warning label to bottom. Lo and Behold, a beautiful candle!

Beeswax candles are one of the numerous types of candles available today. Actually, making candles out of beeswax is one of the oldest materials used and many candle makers will still tell you it is the best candle making material available. If beeswax candle making at home is something that interests you, read on to find out how.

Supplies

Making votive type candles out of beeswax is one of the simplest forms of beeswax candle making ventures. All you will need to complete this project is beeswax, a plain votive candle, sharp knife, ruler and cutting board. It is important to remember that a votive candle with straight sides will make this project easier.

Process

The first thing you need to do is roll your candle. This is where you roll your votive candle on the beeswax to measure the size you will need to cut. You can choose to roll your votive so the top of it is flush with the beeswax or you can roll it so the beeswax is a little higher than the candle.

Whichever style you decide to make, the next step in beeswax candle making is the cutting of the beeswax. Place your candle on the sheet of beeswax and mark the desired height with your knife. To ensure that the cuts you make are straight we recommend using a ruler to cut the beeswax. You will most likely need two lengths of the beeswax, so take the first piece you cut and lay it on the leftover length and cut the second piece.

After you have your lengths of beeswax cut you will need to do the second step of rolling your candle. Take your votive and lay it on its side on one of the lengths ensuring the bottom of the candle is flush with the edge of the beeswax. Once you begin rolling you may notice that there is a taper to your votive. Since most votives are tapered, ensure that the top of the roll is tight even though the bottom may not be. Once the first length is rolled, take the second and begin rolling that where you left off.

Finishing Touches

The final step in beeswax candle making is trimming excess wax. To have the same thickness of beeswax all the way around, only roll the second layer to where the first layer ended and trim the excess. Now you can add any finishing touches you desire. Try a bow or some glitter to give it flare. Beeswax candle making is an inexpensive idea for gifts since everybody loves candles. It’s also an easy project to do with your kids!

Easy Decorative Candles

Whipped wax is an easy way to start making decorative candles once you know how. In this case, we will make decorative cup cake candles using whipped wax topping and waxed cupcake cases. To start, you’ll need to make a whipping wax by melting the wax and adding a little stearine.

Allow the melted wax to skim over and form a top layer crust, then using your egg whisk, beat up the wax to form a frothy mix. Spoon it onto your candle and allow it to set.

This candle can be finish decorated using chunks of recycled wax or scraps from the pan to add a little color. You can also use regular food sprinkles which will really give your candle a very distinctive look. If a more decorative finish is desired, you can use decorated cupcake cases such as silver or gold, but be sure to remove the paper before burning the candle.

Once the wax is poured you need to let the molds cool overnight. This will ensure that they have completely cooled and will not get ruined as you remove the finished product from the molds.
